Gprs/edge Services Performance Measurements in the State of Kuwait

GPRS and EDGE are narrowband wireless data services that are deployed by GSM operators to provide higher data rate. This paper provides a set of measurements that are used to evaluate, from user perspective, GPRS and EDGE services in the State of Kuwait. The Measurements are taken in the Alsalam suburb which has no PSTN network. Measurements show that the GPRS performance is worst than the analog 56 kbpd modem while the EDGE, even with two mobile stations connected, outperforms the 56 kbps modem connection. The measurements are based on measuring the Quality of Service (QoS) experienced by one or two mobile users running applications such as FTP and WWW on laptops connected to GPRS or EDGE networks.
